Front Royal, and Strasburg are all very close to
Winchester. Frederick, MD is approximately 50
miles away and Washington D.C. is approximately
80 miles away.
Activities
The town of Winchester, VA offers plenty of fun
for the whole family. Located in the Blue Ridge
Mountains, Winchester VA has lots of opportunities
to get outdoors and have a lot of fun. You and
your family can enjoy the Frederick County VA parks
that offer hiking, water sports, fishing, and
plenty of space to have fun. Play a game of golf
at the Rock Harbor Golf Course, known as the
jewel of the Shenandoah Valley. There are also
several mini golf courses in the area. Take the
family out for a night of racing at the
Winchester Speedway, from the Virginia Sprint
Series, the kids will love watching the cars go
down the dirt track.
Initiatives to improve and revitalize the
downtown Winchester VA area proved to be successful as the
downtown area is now a popular place where the
history, culture, and arts mix nicely. Learn
more about the Winchester's history at some of these
historic places: the Belle Grove Plantation
house, the Kernstown Battlefield, the Civil War
Orientation center, the Museum of the Shenandoah
Valley, and the Old Court House Civil War
Museum. Visit Wilson’s Wild Animal Park and
learn more about wild animals from all over the
world. With over 200 mammals and a variety of
species of birds and reptiles you will love this
park. Take a ghost tour and learn more about the
history of the area, or visit Dinosaur Land and
learn more about the giant reptiles of the past.
There are also many great activities in Front
Royal and Warren County VA. Front Royal Virginia is full of
scenic forests, mountain trails and parks, and
museums that the whole family will enjoy. You
can visit the Shenandoah National Park, which is
less than a mile from Front Royal. The park
offers plenty of fun and even overnight
accommodations like cabins as well as a
campground. Go hiking on one of the many scenic
trails, or try horseback riding.
Visit Skyline Caverns, in Front Royal, one of
the only places in the world that you can find
Anthodites, cave structures that seem to defy
gravity and only grow about one inch every seven
thousand years. The caverns are always a cool 54
degrees no matter what the weather is like on
the outside, so you are sure to enjoy the fun
and educational tour of the caverns.
For sports fans, catch a minor league baseball
game at the Bing Crosby Stadium and watch the
Front Royal Cardinals hit home runs.
There are many museums and monuments in and
around Frederick County VA that honor veterans and those
that served in the armed forces. The Warren
Rifles Confederate Museum contains a wonderful
collection of arms, battleflags, uniforms and
other Confederate memorabilia that were once
owned by Civil War figures. You can also check
out the Front Royal Historic District, which was
revitalized in the 1980’s. The district is the
oldest part of town and still contains many of
the old structures and homes from the past.
Many history lovers also enjoy visiting the
Belle Boyd Cottage. Belle Boyd lived in Front
Royal Virginia during the Civil War and served as a spy
for the Confederacy. The cottage is located next
to the Warren Rifles Museum, and tours are given
each day.
For those looking for arts and cultural
experiences, you can visit Windrow Gallery and
Murals. The artwork of renowned Front Royal
artist, Patricia Windrow, is on display. Perhaps
the best of her work is known to be found on the
outside of her buildings. She has been creating
beautiful murals on the outside of her building
since 1991.
